Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief of OA, RA, ankylosing spondylitis & gout. Short-term treatment of moderate pain associated w/ dental surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent ≥16 yr OA 30 mg once daily, can be increased to max 60 mg once daily if needed. RA 60 mg once daily, can be increased to max 90 mg once daily if needed. Ankylosing spondylitis 60 mg once daily, can be increased to max 90 mg once daily if needed. Gout 120 mg once daily, limited to max of 8 days treatment. Post-op dental surgery pain 90 mg once daily, limited to a max of 3 days. Patients w/ mild hepatic dysfunction Max: 60 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to etoricoxib or other NSAIDs including ASA & COX-2 inhibitors. Current stomach ulcer or bleeding in the stomach or intestines; serious liver or kidney disease; inflammatory bowel disease eg, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or colitis; uncontrolled high BP; diagnosed heart problems including heart failure (moderate or severe types), angina; previous heart attack, bypass surgery, peripheral arterial disease; any kind of stroke. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <16 yr.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ history of stomach bleeding or ulcers; dehydration; oedema; history of heart failure or any other form of heart disease; history of high BP; history of liver or kidney disease; infection; DM, high cholesterol; smoker. Increased risk of serious GI adverse events; serious CV thrombotic events, MI, & stroke. Long-term NSAID administration has resulted in renal papillary necrosis & other renal injury. Reports of renal toxicity in patients in whom renal prostaglandins have a compensatory role in the maintenance of renal perfusion. Not recommended in patients w/ advanced renal disease. Rarely, associated w/ serious liver injury. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Woman trying to become pregnant. Elderly >65 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Stomach pain. Dry socket; oedema; dizziness, headache; palpitations, arrhythmia; increased BP; bronchospasms; constipation, wind, gastritis, heartburn, diarrhoea, indigestion/stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting, oesophagitis, mouth ulcers; changes in blood tests related to the liver; bruising; weakness & fatigue, flu-like illness.
Drug Interactions
Potential interaction w/ anticoagulants eg, warfarin; rifampicin; MTX; ciclosporin or tacrolimus; lithium; ACE inhibitors & ARBs; diuretics; digoxin; minoxidil; salbutamol; OCs; HRT; ASA & other NSAIDs.
